I never read the novel but from what I saw in the manga they go their separate ways for a while and meet up again later. After that, I heard that their interactions with each other was limited to messages sent to each other with Nalan Yanran being used as the gopher to carry those messages. I found that rather amusing considering according to their 3 year promise she was supposed to be his slave but he cast her aside and she ended up as a gopher anyway.
